This group of products is used to maintain the critical hole diameter and to stabilize the drilling system in the hole during operation.
The reaming shell is part of an overall drilling system that includes a core bit, a core retrieval device (core barrel assembly), the drill string (rods) and the drill rig itself.
The cutting media on the reaming shell may take the form of natural drill diamond on the I-Series type, a combination of synthetic diamond and natural drill diamond on the Heavy Duty type, or strips of tungsten-carbide deposits.
Ideal Diamond Products offer a complete line of quality reaming shells that are produced with finest diamonds to ensure drill string stability besides great wear resistance and consistent hole diameter.

Reaming Shells
This economical diamond set reaming shell is available for use on all conventional and Wireline core barrel assemblies with drill hole sizes of up to 8 inches (203 mm) in diameter. The IDP reaming shell is manufactured with a full matrix body gauge ring that is cast onto the steel tool body for maximum bond strength and tool integrity. In addition, the reaming shell gauge ring features spiral waterway canals that both effectively clear the bit cuttings and provide full 360° hole contact with the matrix body gauge ring.
The setting on the gauge ring is a combination of mechanically rounded ‘P3’ Grade natural drill diamond in the size range of 20 to 35 stones per carat and seismic grade tungsten-carbide wear pads that are cast into a tough, abrasion resistant matrix body.
The IDP reaming shell is recommended for use in light to medium duty applications where the formation conditions are relatively consolidated and non-abrasive. Although hard-metal strips that are used to armor coat the steel tool body are normally not provided on reaming shells, this option is available at an additional cost.
Heavy Duty Reaming Shells
This “Heavy Duty” type represents IDP’s premium line of reaming shells. They are intended for use primarily on Wireline core barrel assemblies with drill hole sizes of up to 6 inches (152 mm) in diameter.
The IDP ‘Heavy Duty’ reaming shell is manufactured with a full matrix body gauge ring that is cast onto the steel tool body for maximum bond strength and tool integrity. The reaming shell gauge ring features include:
A tapered leading edge for ease of movement down the drill hole. Placement directly adjacent to the male thread connection to reduce the possibility of abrasive washout between the shoulder of the drill bit body and the gauge ring of the reaming shell.
The IDP ‘Heavy Duty’ reaming shell is recommended for use in the most difficult applications where the formation conditions are highly unconsolidated and abrasive. As a standard feature, all IDP ‘Heavy Duty’ reaming shells are supplied with hard-metal strips on the exposed outside diameter of the steel tool body. These hard-metal strips are composed of micron sized tungsten-carbide particles that are suspended in a metal alloy and are used to armor coat the steel tool body in order to prevent premature wear.
Stabilized Reaming Shells
IDP’s stabilized reaming shells are available for most wireline core barrel assemblies in the ‘AWL’ (Ø 48,0 mm) to ‘PWL’ (Ø 122,6 mm) size range. Their purpose is to assist in minimizing the degree of drill hole angular deviation in target or deep hole drilling situations.
Dimensional Specifications
The term “set diameter” refers to the dimension of the matrix body gauge ring diameter on which diamonds (or synthetic PCD particles) and tungsten-carbide elements have been physically set in order to preserve this dimension during drilling. The specifications for set diameter tolerances to which IDP manufactures reaming shells are given in the following tables.
